May 14th: Palm House Reopens at Allan Gardens

One of Toronto’s most iconic architectural gems is making its grand return. After years of meticulous construction and restoration, the historic Palm House at Allan Gardens Conservatory is preparing to reopen its doors on May 14, 2025.

Nicknamed “The Dome” for its striking 16-sided glass cupola, the Palm House has stood as a centerpiece of the city’s horticultural landscape since 1910, when it replaced an earlier structure destroyed by fire. Designed by City Architect Robert McCallum in the classic Edwardian style, the building has long been a haven for nature lovers and architecture enthusiasts alike.

The latest round of restoration, launched in October 2022, focused on both preserving its historical features and bringing its infrastructure into the modern age. This included everything from window and glass cladding upgrades to a full overhaul of ventilation and air quality systems. Additional work also improved the adjacent administrative building, public washrooms, and surrounding park areas.

While the Allan Gardens Conservatory itself remained open during construction, the Palm House has been off-limits to visitors for several years. But that’s about to change. With structural updates now complete and final system checks underway, the space is entering its final stage of preparation: cleaning the grounds, installing furnishings, and replanting the lush indoor gardens.

As the City of Toronto prepares to officially unveil the rejuvenated Palm House, locals and tourists alike can look forward to once again stepping inside one of the city’s most enchanting green spaces—where history, architecture, and nature come together under a dazzling glass dome.
